Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this course, we will read literary and programmatic texts that were written between 1820 and 1865, during the so-called American Renaissance. The writers of these texts are often seen to have “sparked a literary renaissance that helped American writing to achieve its first literary maturity” (Norton Anthology of American Literature).
After contextualizing this period historically and culturally, the seminar will focus on the transcendentalist movement and short stories of the American Renaissance in the first half of the semester. The second half will be dedicated to texts from beyond the initial ‘canon’ that literary scholar F.O. Matthiessen proclaimed in his 1941 work American Renaissance: Art and Expression in the Age of Emerson and Whitman. We will read slave narratives by Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass as well as female voices, such as Fanny Fern and Emily Dickinson.

This seminar will be reading-intensive, and all reading is required to participate. All texts will either be provided on Digicampus or are available on Project Guttenberg, though you may, of course, also purchase (used) copies of (some of) the texts. The final reading list will be provided in the first session.

If you are interested in participating in this course for your state exam preparation and do not plan to receive any credit points, please do NOT sign up during the regular Anmeldephase but just email me a few weeks before the beginning of the semester.

If you take this course as part of a Mehrkursmodul (EAS-1411 or EAS-1414) please make sure that you are also signing up for the required Übung (Narrative Analysis, Fri. 11.45 am – 1.15 pm).

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 12.08.2024 bis 26.08.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 26.08.2024 um 18 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2024 und endet am 07.10.2024.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 03.10.2024 um 18:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.09.2024, 08:00 bis 03.10.2024, 12:00.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 02.09.2024 08:00 bis 03.10.2024 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
