Comment/Description

Since the 1960s modern sociolinguistics has investigated the connections between language use and social positions (e.g. class, gender, age), social relations (e.g. networks, peer groups) and social norms (e.g. communities of practice, standardization). It has evolved methodologies focusing especially on the investigation of casual spoken forms of language. The application of sociolinguistics to historical data has posed special challenges but has made great progress in the last 25 years, by exploring the usefulness of data as diverse as private letters and dialogue in novels. In this course we will look at selected modern and historical studies.
