This seminar provides an introductory overview of the concepts and themes pertinent to the study of European Security Policy. It sets out to locate the European Union in the context of International Relations, both in theory and practice. It will explore how the EU frames and conducts its international relations and examine many of the key themes in this context: the EU as a sub-system of International Relations, the EU and the process of International Relations, and the EU as a power. The course is designed to equip the student with the necessary analytical tools to understand and evaluate all aspects of the role of the EU in the world. It provides an introduction to key aspects of the study of foreign policy with the specific objective of applying conceptual frameworks for analysis to real world phenomena.
1. A familiarity with the key debates among European Union studies scholars concerning the nature of the polity, and the policies developed by it.
2. An appreciation of the range of political and institutional influences that have shaped the EU development.
3. The opportunity to develop transferable skills such as the appreciation of different interests and the ability to defend a point of view in the seminars.

This seminar is linked to the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Counter-Terrorism that was awarded to Professor Christian Kaunert in July 2018. In 2020, Prof Kaunert was also awarded a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, a Jean Monnet Network of Excellence in EU Counter-Terrorism, and a Jean Monnet module in Hybrid Warfare. The Jean Monnet Network on EU Counter-Terrorism, which includes the University of Augsburg, is to achieve recognition globally as a leader in the field. The network will have a strong international dimension by drawing upon long-established and emergent collaborations with a range of researchers in the UK, Europe and Israel and North Africa. The network includes the University of South Wales, University of the West of England Bristol and Cardiff University in the UK, Dublin City University in Ireland, the University of Augsburg in Germany, the Egmont Institute in Belgium, the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, the University of Pisa in Italy, CIDOB Barcelona and the University of Deusto Bilbao in Spain, the University of Iasi in Romania, Prague Metropolitan University in the Czech Republic, the IDC Herzliya in Israel and the University of Jendouba in Tunisia.
