In this seminar we will take a look at the various ways in which the concept of performance figures in contemporary city texts both in the interaction of the inhabitants of a city with each other and in the representation of the city itself. At the beginning of the semester we will first access the concept of performance from different theoretical points of view in the texts of Judith Butler, Michel de Certeau and others and will then apply those approaches to three contemporary city texts. Our focus will then be on the analysis of the nexus between language, power and action in the various instances of performance in those texts such as the characters’ walks through the city, the specific image of the city that is created through the perception of the protagonists and the political implications that might be derived from those performances.
