"Identity Politics" - Few other contemporary political concepts seem to elicit such strong responses. While the term is more often than not used in a pejorative fashion, questions of the relation between politics and identity are rarely accounted for systematically. Everyone has an opinion on "identity politics", few ask what politics has to do with identity. The theoretical point of departure of this seminar will be the idea, that all politics is, in a certain sense, "identity politics". To that effect, we will trace the intellectual history of the relation between politics and identity from 19th century German idealism to the present. From Hegels "Phänomenologie des Geistes" to current debates on post-colonialism, standpoint epistemology, white privilege and Black Liberation.
All classes will be held in English. The literature will be predominantly English, the obvious exception being when the original is in German. Papers can be handed in in both English and German.
