Lehrende

Thomas Hardy's work has a safe place in world literature. Not only is Hardy one of the main representatives of English literature in transition between the Victorian Age and Modernism, but characters such as Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Jude Fawley, and Michael Henchard have also gained archetypal status in literary history. The seminar will take a close look at three of Hardy's novels: The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). Supporting work will be done on a selection of Hardy's (unsystematic) theoretical and poetological essays as well as philosophical intertexts pertaining to Hardy's writings. Apart from aesthetic questions we will focus on questions of the industrial revolution, gender relations, modernisation, and time.
Students will be provided with copies of the essays, our analysis of the novels will be based on the Norton Critical editions of Tess, Jude and The Mayor, which students are required to use.
