Linguistic typology is a field of research that is concerned with the systematic comparison of language structures. It tries to identify features which are shared by languages all over the world but also looks at where they differ from each other. In her introduction to the field, Velupillai boils this down to three central questions: “what is out there?”, “where does it occur?” and “why do we have particular patterns?” (2012: 15).
This seminar is directed to students who have a basic linguistic background, but it does not assume any prior knowledge in typology. We will first get a general overview of the field and then discuss language universals and language types. Finally, we will compare English to various languages all around the world, focusing on a number of aspects, such as sound inventory, case system, syntactic patterns and word order, politeness, or language change.
