Module assignments

The English language can truly be called a “global language” as it is estimated that a quarter of the world’s population is now able to communicate in English at a useful level. Furthermore, it is the most widely utilized language around the planet for international business, diplomacy, advanced education, law, the media, as well as for the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge. A large proportion of those who use English are speakers of other languages, entailing a situation in which there are more non-native speakers than native speakers. As a result of this reality, in recent years a new approach to studying the use of English in international communication - English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) - has arisen.
This course will explore issues related to ELF, including the features and characteristics of ELF use, the role of native speaker and standard language norms, language teaching and learning goals, linguistic stratification, and attitudes towards non-native speakers, among others.
