Comment/Description

Affect theory is an interdisciplinary field that explores the ways in which emotions and bodily sensations influence human experience and social life. It emphasizes the non-cognitive, pre-verbal aspects of experience that precede and shape conscious thought.
Affect theory broadens the scope of literary analysis beyond cognitive and representational frameworks. The seminar will consider the affective dimensions of texts and discuss how literature evokes, manipulates, and represents bodily sensations and emotions. We shall also take a look at reader-response theory and elaborate on the emotional and sensory experiences of readers. We shall investigate how texts generate affective responses and how these responses shape interpretation and meaning-making.

We shall read and study the following texts closely:

Ian McEwan, "Atonement"; Sally Rooney, "Normal People"; Lucy Prebble, "Enron"; Lucy Kirkwood, "The Children"; Stef Smith, "Human Animals" and a selection of contemporary poetry.

Students are requested to purchase the following edition of McEwan's novel: Ian McEwan, London: Ballantine Books, reprint. https://www.amazon.de/Atonement-Novel-Ian-McEwan/dp/038572179X
