The cities of Ostia and Pompeii feature prominently in most of the major research topics in Roman Archaeology today. Whether we are discussing Romanization, urbanism, gender or globalization, to name but a few, these two cities have a lot to contribute to the debate. Each city illustrates different aspects of Roman history and urban development that together give a comprehensive overview. Compared to the majority of other Roman cities, these two sites are incredibly well preserved and have benefited from centuries of research. As such they offer vivid witness to how people in the Roman period lived and died. This course offers the opportunity to become more familiar with the archaeology of these cities, the methods used to investigate the remains, and the contributions they make to modern scholarship. This means that students will have the option of exploring different aspects of archaeological research and to expand on their own research interests.
While this course will be taught remotely it will retain most aspects of the traditional course format. There will be weekly lectures with some assigned reading and discussion sessions. The course will be taught in English but students are allowed to submit their own work in German or English. A lot of the reading material will also be in German. If students have any concerns or questions they are more than welcome to contact Dr. Rheeder by e-mail at annalize.rheeder@philhist.uni-augsburg.de
