You are free to choose any edition (also e-book) for all three texts. I recommend reading The House on Mango Street before the term, if you are not familiar with the text already.
This class is an introduction to the writings of LatinX authors in the United States with an emphasis on the distinctions and similarities that have shaped the experiences and the cultural imagination among different Latinx communities (e.g. Mexican Americans or Chicanos, Puerto Ricans or Nuyoricans, and Cuban Americans). Particularly the literary representation and negotiation of borders and border experiences can be seen as a core topic in Latinx literature and will therefore be one focus of this seminar: The issues of border crossing and border formation characterize very different narratives that imagine not only the nation, but also American national and LatinX identity. Topics to be discussed include identity formation and negotiation in terms of language, race, gender, sexuality, and class; the colonial subject; diaspora and emigration; the development and adjustment of Latinx identity; and activism through art.
