In this seminar we will read and discuss a group of 17th-century poets called the ‘metaphysical poets’. The term ‘metaphysical’ was applied almost a century later by other poets as a derogatory term for ‘(overly) intellectual’, because these poets in their works often discuss everyday experience in a rather philosophical way. They do so using surprising, unexpected imagery and conceits (= extended metaphors), for example a pair of compasses as an image describing affection for a loved one, or a flea as an image for sexual intercourse.
Together we will explore the way these images are constructed and affect the reader, but we will also look at the historical and contemporary reception of these poets and their work and evaluate criticism of their poetry. A particular focus, however, will be on the expression of feelings, such as love, desire or grief, through such ‘metaphysical conceits’ and on the way metaphysical poetry unites affect and cognition.
COVID-19 notice: This seminar will be taught online in weekly Zoom meetings. In consultation with the attendees, several of the weekly meetings will be held in person at the university (infection rates permitting).
