Kommentar/Beschreibung

“Love hurts, love scars” as the famous Scottish hard rock band Nazareth put it in their song “Love Hurts” in the 1970s. Indeed, love (along with its destructive effects) seems to be the master theme in art and literature from antiquity on. In this seminar, we will explore various representations of love in British literature. After a thorough introduction to various concepts of love (including antiquity, courtly love, romantic love, philosophical underpinnings, psychological and sociological aspects, ethical considerations, and emotional/affective responses etc.), we will analyze the varying concepts of love along with their underlying aesthetics in a wide range of literary works spanning various genres (poetry, prose fiction, and drama) and historical periods (from the Early Modern Period to Postmodernism). The texts to be discussed will comprise, among others, classics such as William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility”. In order to fully understand these texts, we shall also scrutinize their respective historical and literary contexts.

A reader with assorted texts will be provided at the beginning of the term. Students are required to obtain their own copy of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” and William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”.

PS "Addiction and Substance Abuse" --> Ü "Poetry Analysis" (Kerler; Wed 11:45 - 13:15)

The PS "American Neo-Slave Narratives" will be held as a block seminar starting April, the 7th. Registration is only possible the early registration phase from February 24th until March 5th and all places will be allotted on March, the 7th. This seminar will not open again for registration during the regular registration phase from March 10th until April 14th.

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 24.02.2025 bis 05.03.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 07.03.2025. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 10.03.2025 und endet am 14.04.2025.

Students of English and American Studies, as well as those studying English within a teacher-training degree, can register for the advanced and specialization modules during the early registration phase to ensure their academic progress. A certain quota of course places will be made available for registration from the 24th of February , 2025, to the 5th of March, 2025. The allocation of places will take place on the 7th of March, 2025. Please note that during this registration phase, students in higher semesters and M.A. students will be given priority in the allocation process.
The general registration phase begins on the 10th of March, 2025, and ends on the 14th of April, 2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Diese Regel gilt von 10.03.2025 12:00 bis 14.04.2025 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 16.04.2025 um 13:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 10.03.2025, 12:00 bis 14.04.2025, 12:00.
