Kommentar/Beschreibung

The Ethics and Politics of Contemporary Canadian Literature
Canadian literature has rapidly diversified in the past fifty years; as Smaro Kamboureli has succinctly put it, it developed from ‘CanLit’ to ‘CanLits’ (2014, 1). As such, it is located in a complex constellation of different colonial heritages and emancipatory impulses, of local and national as well as diasporic orientations, and it critically negotiates and reflects its own social conditions: what does, what could, what should society look like? Which values play a role? How universal are ‘human rights’? How are conflicts resolved? How does literature ‘make worlds’ and contribute to meaning-making processes in a complex and globalized world?
In this class, we’ll look at examples from Anglophone Canadian literatures of the past twenty years and discuss how they explore these and other questions in dystopian fiction, postmodern narration, autobiography, and other genres. Examples will include novels, short stories, poems, and life narratives. Students are asked to get copies of the following books: Michael Ondaatje, Anil’s Ghost (2000); Emily St. John Mandel, Station Eleven (2014); and Wab Kinew, The Reason You Walk (2015). Additional texts (short stories, poems, essays etc.) will be included in the course package.
