Comment/Description

The goal of this lecture course is to provide (1) an introduction to the theory and practice of pragmatics, and (2) the theory and practice of discourse analysis. We will focus on pragmatics as a perspective and apply and adapt the pragmatic perspective to the strategic use of language in discourse. We will discuss deixis, presupposition, speech act theory, Gricean pragmatics, politeness theories, the structuring of discourse, cohesion and coherence, and discourse markers.
