Kommentar/Beschreibung

American literature has a strong tradition of engaging with the natural environment. One of the important shifts in the past decades in the study of such texts has been from 'nature writing' to 'environmental literature', thus paying tribute not only to the cultural constructedness of 'nature', but also to an expansion of focus regarding the 'environment' and human and more-than-human relationalities. In this context, the notion of the Anthropocene has gained prominence as a relevant, if conceptually contested framework, In this lecture course, we will look at how American writers have responded to the challenges of the Anthropocene, understood with Dipesh Chakrabarty (2008) as a period in which humans have become a "geological force". Topics of this course include but are not limited to climate change and its effects, environmental in/justice, ecological citizenship, or more-than-human relations, but also questions of literary form and the ways in which writers address such issues and to what potential effect.

While this is formally a lecture course, students are expected to actively prepare for and engage in class discussions. Also, students are strongly encouraged to attend the relevant panels or keynotes of an interdicsiplinary conference "Environmental Citizenship: Politics, Practices, Representations" that will take place in Munich from July 6-8. This conference offers students a unique insight into current research and discussions on the topics relevant to this class. Participation will be sponsored by the American Studies department, and details on the conference will be provided in the first session and on Digicampus.
