Kommentar/Beschreibung

Wichtiger Hinweis: Die erste Sitzung des Seminars wird erst am 06.12.2024 abgehalten. Das Seminar findet vom 06.12.2024 bis zum 31.01.2025 statt.
For more than three centuries, Brazil lived with slavery, both during the colonial period and in the first century after independence from Portugal. Initially, “indigenous” populations were the target of slavery, and in the first decades after the arrival of the Portuguese colonizer, the enslavement of populations from various regions of Africa and their descendants began. Slavery is not only a historical issue, but also a challenge for contemporary societies, both in the Americas and in those countries that participated in some way in the trade, financing, and exploitation of enslaved labor in Europe. In Brazil, the legacy of slavery is present in many ways. The seminar is dedicated to inequalities based on race and gender. The discipline explores the historical origins of these inequalities, anchored in more than three centuries of slavery of indigenous and black populations of African origin and their descendants, as well as the implications of these persistent inequalities, which present challenges for the inclusion of descendants of enslaved populations, in the case of the black population, and for the preservation of the lifestyles and cultural heritage of “indigenous” populations. The discipline is based on a multidisciplinary approach, combining sociology, history, economics, audiovisual production and literature.
