Comment/Description

Comics require a specific analysis, which focuses on textual and visual elements. Thus, it combines different approaches, including basics of narrative theory, visual culture, media analysis as well as film theory. Furthermore, this particular medium is able to deal in its own way with power. The textual portrayal of a (supposedly) powerful character can, for instance, vary from the visual one and thus provide the reader with a more distinct and complex depiction. Both showing and telling require special but still combined analyses, which you will acquire during this course.

Besides, this course focuses explicitly on the portrayal of women in superhero comics, which changes greatly over the last decades. Starting with the birth of the superhero comic, we will analyze the typical roles fulfilled by female characters from the 1940s until today, which are the superheroine, the damsel in distress and the superhero’s love interest. In order to do that, this course will provide you with basic theories on gender studies in general and regarding the superhero narrative.
The focus of this course lies, however, primarily on practical approaches and the analysis of certain female characters in superhero comics such as Wonder Woman, Invisible Girl, Lois Lane and Jane Foster.

After a short introduction to analyzing comics as well as theories of gender studies, you will practice your skills throughout sample analyses, thesis paragraphs, in-class exercises, discussions and/or response paragraphs.
