Comment/Description

Utopia has a very long literary and political tradition, which we will examine starting through Thomas More’s influential conceptualization. Following a theoretical and historical overview of conceptual shifts, we will analyze and discuss a range of 20th- and 21st-century utopian narratives across different genres, including ‘hopepunk’ and ‘solarpunk’. Course readings (in this order): Thomas More’s Utopia (1516, available via Project Gutenberg), Ursula Le Guin’s The Dispossessed (1974, Orion Publishing Group edition, ISBN 9781473228412), Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower (1993, Headline edition, ISBN 9781472263667) and Annalee Newitz’s The Terraformers (2023, Little, Brown Book Group edition, ISBN 9780356520865).

Please note that for the modules EAS-1854 and EAS-1914, this seminar must be combined with the Übung “Theorizing and Analyzing the Future” (Prof. McPherson).

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 12.08.2024 bis 28.08.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 30.08.2024. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2024 und endet am 07.10.2024.
