Comment/Description

This Block Seminar is held in English. To become an independent learner, a child must be able to monitor their own learning, reflect on their understanding, and then take appropriate action to extend their learning. Engaging in such “thinking about thinking” is cognitively demanding and effortful, and an important question is when young children develop the ability to do this. This seminar focuses on the development of metacognition from preschool to adolescence and its relevance for learning. Current knowledge about the development of metacognitive skills will be reviewed, methods used to assess metacognition will be critically considered, and the relevance of metacognition for teaching and learning in the school context will be emphasised.
