Virgil's Aeneid does for the Roman Empire what Homer did for the Greeks, fashioning its new myth.
Virgil then becomes Dante the character's guide through the Inferno, Dante the author's fashioning of an epic in the Italian vernacular.
A highly recommended translation for Virgil is Allen Mandelbaum. This is also available inexpensively on the internet.
But whatever English translation of Virgil you use, it must have book and line numbers.
For Dante it is crucial that everyone obtain either the John D. Sinclair trnaslation with commentary or the Charles Singleton translation as well as the additional volume of his commentary.
These translations are the only ones to provide the old Italian and English translation on facing pages, and it is not possible to read Dante without a detailed commentary, and Sinclair’s and Singleton's are the best.
The Sinclair edition or the two volumes of Singleton (the Bollingen editions from Princeton) are required texts for the course.
As a proseminar, there will be two essays required, one on Virgil and one on Dante.
Christian Gottlieb Heyne: “It is hard to read Virgil right without an interpreter—and with one.“
