Comment/Description

Das Buch An Essay on Man: An Introduction to a Philosophy of Human Culture veröffentlicht Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945) 1944 im amerikanischen Exil. Das Buch stellt eine überarbeitete und komprimierte Fassung seines dreibändigen Werks Philosophie der symbolischen Formen (1923-29) dar. Cassirer will den gemeinsamen Mittelpunkt, zu dem Mythos, Religion, Sprache, Kunst, Wissenschaft und Geschichte streben, bestimmen. In ihnen sieht er Bedeutungssphären, denen verschiedene Formen des theoretischen Verhaltens des Menschen der Welt gegenüber entsprechen. Das Wesen des Menschen beschreibt Cassirer mit Hilfe des Begriffs „animal symbolicum“. Im Seminar setzen wir uns mit der im Essay dargelegten Theorie auseinander. Arbeiten kann man sowohl mit dem englischen als auch mit dem deutschen Text. Die Vorträge oder Referate werden jedoch auf Deutsch gehalten und diskutiert.
