Students are responsible for independently reading the assigned literature and watching the 3 pre-recorded lectures each week. There will also be 1 synchronous class each week that is dedicated to discussions and presentations (from 17:00-18:00). In terms of assessment, students are responsible for: writing short critical reviews, participating in synchronous discussions, giving an in-class presentation, and writing a final paper.

This class explores the topics of Resource Usage and Sustainability in the Ancient Mediterranean world. It draws upon examples of the use and abuse of natural resources from across the Mediterranean world, and roughly covers the period from 600 BCE-400 CE. Did ancient cultures have the idea of sustainability? Was it similar or different to the way we understand resource usage today? How did ancient cultures use energy? Is a resource something we want, or something we need? In order to answer these and related questions, this course introduces theories and methods used to study resources in our current world. Sustainability and the study of sustainable resource usage is one of the most researched topics in the world, and there are many new and diverse approaches for studying ancient habits, relationships, and reactions to the use of resources. At the same time, by identifying ancient successes and failures in the use of resources, this course aims to open a dialogue between ancient and modern sustainability.
The course will be completely online and will be a mix of synchronous and asynchronous meetings each week. This course will be done in a block format, meaning that there will be 4 hours of class each week for 7 weeks.
