Comment/Description

Greek mythology is one of the major cultural sources of Western civilization. Numerous myths and characters have been adopted in different national literatures throughout various epochs. In this seminar we will, firstly, discuss the term “myth” and its philosophical, psychological, and especially aesthetic implications. Afterwards, we will analyse adaptations of Greek mythology throughout the history of English literature. The selected texts will range from early modern times (e.g. Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare), Romanticism, Modernism up to Postmodernism as well as comprise various genres. In order to fully understand these texts, we shall also explore their respective socio-historical and literary contexts. A detailed reading list will be made available at the beginning of term.
