In this class, we will identify social science and psychological conceptualizations and theories from relevant fields including communication, (social) psychology, economy, and health sciences that are able to explain the most recent digital health phenomena. We will identify areas of interest to the class and will not stop with workout videos, meal prep, and self-care, but also think of TikTok challenges, training routines, self-assessment, mental health, work-life balance etc. Students will work in groups to identify a specific phenomenon and aim at explaining it using social science theories and coming up with a few specific hypotheses. Students will develop a study design (incl. sample, procedure, and data analytical strategy) that would be able to plausibly assess at least one of the identified hypotheses. The class can be particularly useful for those thinking about writing an empirical Master’s thesis in the field of digital health communication in the future.
