Comment/Description

Partial differential equations (PDE) arising from convex minimization problems describe physical processes. However, in many interesting cases, they are difficult to solve analytically and have to be approximated numerically.
The course analyzes finite element methods for their numerical simulation. Among the target applications are topology optimization, multi-well problems and fluid dynamics. Depending on the particular problem, the lecture will discuss the algorithms and the mathematics that underlie the numerical methods as well as their practical implementation.
