Comment/Description

Drawing on Jacques Derrida’s notion of “hostipitality”, this seminar seeks to explore various instances of hospitality together with its inherent contradictions/failure in British literature. According to Derrida, hospitality is an “impossible” concept inasmuch as it not only deconstructs itself in the course of its own performativity but is – paradoxically – constituted/realized precisely because of these contradictions. In this seminar, we shall, firstly, approach the phenomenon theoretically and then analyze a wide range of literary texts comprising various periods (from Chaucer to Julian Barnes) and genres (drama, poetry and prose). The larger thematic topics to be discussed will involve “hos(ti)pitality and the politics of love/sex”, “hos(ti)pitality, community and identity” and “hos(ti)pitality and unreliable narration”.
A reader with assorted primary and secondary literature will be made available at the beginning of term.
Students are required to obtain their own copies of the following texts:
William Shakespeare, Titus Andronicus
Patrick McGrath, The Grotesque
Jez Butterworth, Jerusalem
