Kommentar/Beschreibung

In 1872, Yellowstone National Park became the first national park in the US. Three more parks were created before the beginning of the twentieth century. Protecting the “treasures of the nation,” and preserving some of the countries “wilderness” found much encouragement at the time when Westward expansion was coming to an end, as white settlers had made their way across the continent and removed Indigenous peoples to reservations. In 1872, the US, had been an independent nation for under 100 years, and the Civil War and legal slavery had ended not even a decade previously. The nation was also still very much trying to define itself in terms of culture, art and literature, and the negotiations of concerning the attitudes towards nature, wilderness and land-use frequently lay at the heart of these definitions.
We will discuss a variety of texts in this course with the aim of tracing how nature, or more accurately discourses of nature, contributed to and in turn were influenced by understandings of nation in 19th century America. This also means that we will discuss the ways in which other identity categories, such race, gender, and class become important factors in those negotiations of nature and nation as well.
