Kommentar/Beschreibung

The University Library supports early-career researchers in Augsburg throughout the research process – from literature searching to publication. With reference to the Research Lifecycle, this course focuses on the “Collect & Create” stage.

Googling has become part of everyday life – and AI tools seem well on their way to joining it, with the boundaries increasingly blurred. But what does the world’s most popular search box actually offer when it comes to scholarly research – and what doesn’t it (and why)? How do commercial search engines really work? What sets Google apart from Google Scholar and from non-commercial databases and portals? And in which direction are AI-based search engines heading?

This workshop focuses on open web research. It provides practical knowledge and tips on how to make better use of Google and other tools for academic literature searches. At the same time, it raises awareness of the limits of everyday search tools and explains what can – and cannot – be found effectively, and why.
