An aesthetic-affective category that eludes (full) representation, the sublime plays a central role in Romanticism. In this course, we will, firstly, trace theoretical concepts of the sublime from antiquity to the present (Longinus, Burke, Kant, Lyotard, Zizek etc.) and then analyze its (failure of) representation in the works of the British Romantics (among others, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein).
A reader with selected (primary and secondary) texts will be made available at the beginning of term. Besides that, students are required to obtain their own copy of the following text:
• Mary Shelley, _Frankenstein_ (1818 text; Penguin Classics)
COVID-19 notice: The seminar will be taught on site (room D/1003). If required by pandemic-related regulations, we will switch to weekly zoom-meetings.
