Comment/Description

How to ‘capture’ a river in writing, how to ‘write a river’? Freshwater – such as rivers – presents a more recent focus in the so-called ‘Blue Humanities’, a field developing from the Environmental Humanities, but focused specifically on water. This class will first provide an overview of the Blue Humanities which invite us to shift our perspective to understand salt waters and freshwaters alike as “integral parts of all planetary water ecologies with their co-constitutive and dynamic relationalities,” as Serpil Oppermann puts it (Blue Humanities. Storied Waterscapes in the Anthropocene, CUP 2023, p. 10) before we will look at how writers from the US, Canada, and the UK ‘write rivers’ as a central example of freshwater. What kind of significance do they attribute to them? How do they connect them to questions of individual and collective identity, place, nature, and environmental justice? And what kinds of aesthetic forms they find for them?

The course will focus on poetry, essays, and plays. Students are expected to buy a copy of Alice Oswald’s Dart (2001). All other texts will be provided on Digicampus.
