Kommentar/Beschreibung

Human activity has harmed and reconstructed our planet so profoundly that scientists argue we have entered a new geological epoch called the “Anthropocene”, “emphasiz[ing] the central role of mankind in geology and ecology” and the “still growing impacts of human activities on earth and atmosphere” (Crutzen and Stoermer, “The Anthropocene”). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) August 2021 report on climate change clearly agrees, stating, “It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land. Widespread and rapid changes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and biosphere have occurred.”

In this seminar, we will ask the question what the role of literature, specifically drama, can be when facing those complex ecological as well as associated social issues and how individual plays incorporate ecocritical perspectives, regarding both form and content. Literary studies scholar Una Chaudhuri’s argues, “The daunting scale of climate phenomena should not block our access to perspectives offered by the more intimate spaces of narrative and the embodied knowledge of performance. Approached in this way, stories and plays become generative sites for the new conversations that must take place between our species and the myriad planetary realities.” Starting out with theoretical frameworks of ecocriticism and eco-drama, the course will then offer students the opportunity conduct in-depth analyses of a variety of North American plays.

This class will be taught in a hybrid format, meaning that we will seek to integrate on-site meetings in smaller groups and digital formats, both synchronous and asynchronous. The practice of such a mixed format will very much depend on pandemic-related regulations and students’ individual comfort level with on-site formats. The list of plays will be announced at the start of the seminar.

Students taking this course for the module EAS-1411 will have to attend the corresponding Übung “Drama Analysis” with Leila Vaziri.
