Comment/Description

Historical Fiction is a genre which utilises prominent figures or events of the past and moves them into a fictionalised realm. In this course we will discuss a multilayered approach to the genre if a work has been written in the past about the past. As the past is inaccessible in its original actuality, or the way it once was, it is a way to engage with history in a creative way. This creative approach enables us to depict a myriad of topics such as war trauma, dealing with difficult historical events, cultural development, class differences, the nature of time, and the Enlightenment. Furthermore, we will look at the problems regarding a clear-cut definition between genres and subgenres, and the aspiration or lack thereof towards historical accuracy in the reception of the genre.

In order to obtain credits students will write an essay and additionally either have to write a thesis paragraph, do a moderation, or a presentation.
