Kommentar/Beschreibung

The period between 1914 and 1945 is a central one for the United States in terms of its international standing and its self-perception as a nation. By 1945, after the development and testing of nuclear bombs (dropping them on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), the United States can respectively be seen as “becoming a leader on the global stage” and as substantially implicated in “an era of unprecedented carnage [that] ended with the prospect of human self-annihilation” (Anderson 3-4). On the national scale, the period is likewise marked by a series of historical developments and cultural phenomena: the Lost Generation, the Roaring Twenties, Modernism, the Harlem Renaissance, the stock market crash of 1929, Prohibition, the Golden Age of Hollywood, The Great Depression, and the New Deal, but also for example the Pulp Era of publishing, are just some central keywords associated with that period. The Literature of this period played a significant role, reflecting but also actively shaping, negotiating, and analyzing the discourses of its time.

We will discuss a selection of literary works from this period against the backdrop of historical and cultural developments at the time. This is survey course, so please be aware that in order to get at least a partial impression of the period you will be expected to read and prepare for discussion a substantial amount of primary texts plus secondary reading for the course. Please keep this in mind when you consider the number of total courses you plan to attend this term.
