The course will provide a general overview of stylistics, focusing mainly on contemporary approaches of the main theoretical issues in the discipline (e.g. forensic stylistics, literary stylistics, corpus stylistics etc.). It will also explore the area of critical stylistics which is founded on discourse analytical approaches used for explaining the impact of texts, taking into consideration the social and political contexts in which texts are produced and read. Furthermore, we will be looking at the different ways in which ideologies are contained in the language we use, e.g. through modality, opposition and transitivity. Another aim of the course is to introduce students to a range of analytical techniques for the critical analysis of texts. To understand the effects within specific historical and socio-political contexts in which those texts were produced is yet another essential part of the class.
