Comment/Description

This course supplements the seminar "Theories and Methods," introducing students to basic theoretical and philosophical approaches to literature and culture. We will discuss theories/approaches dedicated to structuralism/formalism, psychoanalysis, poststructuralism, reader-response theory, gender studies, postcolonial theory, as well as a selection of theoretical paradigms from the 21st century. Drawing on these approaches, special emphasis will be given to exemplary analyses of literary texts.

A reader with assorted primary and secondary literature will be made available at the beginning of term.
