Module assignments

The workshop will show how the principles of the Japanese martial art "aikido" can be enacted during physical and verbal conflicts to restore harmony. Body exercises and role playing methods will be used to demonstrate the transformation of conflict into cooperation. No prior aikido or martial arts experience is required. The main language during the workshop is body language (the reflection of the body experience is done in English).

The workshop stresses the difference between re-action and action. To manage conflict situations actively, it is necessary to overcome habitual reaction patterns and to be present in the experience without valuing. As a result, one will gain the freedom of conscious choice between alternative options of action. Body exercises to neutralize the affective flood and to become/stay relaxed are centering, grounding and reframing the situation (attacker as a partner, attack as useful incoming energy, conflict as an opportunity for change, curiosity instead of fear when facing threat etc.).

In addition, the aiki principles of conflict regulation are demonstrated. The basic message of aikido is “giving in to get your way”! To embody this message it needs two kinds of aikido movements which are woven together to a coherent pattern:
1. Enter (contact, connection...)
2. Turn (blending, perspective taking...)
3. Enter again (lead, control, directing attention to what causes conflict...)
4. Turn again (do I still walk in his/her shoes? Am I empathic enough?)
and so on until problem solving comes to a satisfying end for the conflict partners.

Finally, the application of aiki principles is simulated in verbal conflict situations by role-playing and spinning dialogues to learn how these principles efficiently work with verbal (spoken) language. To improve transfer, the role playing is focused on real life settings (“living cases”). In general, transfer possibilities and hindrances are discussed to encourage the participants employing aiki principles and communication in everyday conflict situations (privately and professionally).
