“The Gothic exposes the repressed, what is hidden, unspoken, deliberately forgotten, in the lives of individuals and of cultures” (Charles Crow 2).
In this course we will focus on a number of examples Gothic fiction in US-American and Canadian settings from the colonial era to the contemporary hybrid form of the New Weird (which blends gothic horror, the fantastic, and science fiction elements).
We will begin by anchoring North American gothic tropes in their specific cultural history and then trace characteristic aspects of gothic fiction such as the supernatural, monsters, hauntings, the uncanny, mental illness, mysteries and an atmosphere of dread. Our guiding question in this endeavor will be how the Gothic and the New Weird work as genres (that employ these elements) and how these genres serve to explore haunting elements of North American history and culture, such as dispossession, colonialism, genocide, and other “repressed” elements of national heritage. We will thus also trace ways in which works of gothic fiction can render visible, question, and challenge such previously hidden elements.

Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 12.10.2022 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
