Courtroom discourse is a specific register with specialised discourse types and genres, such as witness examination, pleading, closing speech and sentencing. Both expert, professional and lay interactants in various roles contribute to this discourse. It is thus characterized by a mixture of legal language with its particular features and everyday language. Its norms of interaction, regarding e.g. cooperation and politeness, also differ from general language use. In this course we will approach courtroom data from the present and the past (Old Bailey proceedings) with the help of pragmatics, discourse analysis and argumentation theory.
