Unlike formal approaches to grammar, which consider grammar as a set of rules specifying all possible grammatical structures of a language, functional approaches to grammar are concerned with how language is used to achieve various purposes in different social contexts. This course will focus on one particular functional approach to grammar, i.e. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), which sees language as a system that represents a resource for speakers to express particular functions in social interaction. The aim of this course is threefold: (1) to introduce students to the basic tenets and key concepts of SFG (e.g. nominal group, mood/modality, cohesion, theme/rheme, process/participant); (2) to give students the opportunity to practically apply these principles by analyzing sentences from different text types; (3) to compare the key topics underlying SFG with more traditional approaches to grammar, notably Quirk et al.’s Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language.
