Kommentar/Beschreibung

"For having lived in Westminster – how many years now? over twenty, – one feels even in the midst of the traffic, or waking at night, Clarissa was positive, a particular hush, or solemnity; an indescribable pause; a suspense (but that might be her heart, affected, they said, by influenza) before Big Ben strikes. There! Out it boomed. First a warning, musical; then the hour, irrevocable. The leaden circles dissolved in the air." (Virginia Woolf – Mrs. Dalloway)

In Mrs. Dalloway Virginia Woolf uses Big Ben as a recurring symbol of the relentless passing of time, issuing a “warning” even. Marcel Proust in “In Search of Lost Time” uses time to write about memory. Various authors employ stream-of-consciousness techniques to trace a character's inner life in real-time.
Time is an essential aspect of narratives – and of human lives. Time in literature can be used in various ways and to various effects – time loops, time moving backwards, flashbacks, foreshadowings, inaccurate memories, the past finding its way into the present – are all ways in which stories use and shape time to specific effects.
Moreover, scholars of literary and cultural studies have taken on “temporality” (the being in time or expressing a specific relation to time) as a lens to critically re-think norms in contemporary society. New concepts emerged, such as “queer temporality” which challenges the ideal of the future as embodied by heterosexual reproduction and “the symbolic Child,” or "crip time," a concept stemming from disability studies that disrupts normative notions of productive time. In Age Studies, scholars challenge the notion of growing older as a decline narrative. In Environmental Studies, scholars use the term “Anthropocene” to mark a new chapter in the planet’s time, and are pushing for an understanding of “deep time” that thinks beyond human time.

In this course, time will be our entry point to look at a variety of works and genres and how they use diverse ways of narrating time to guide their readers focus, to purposely disorient or make them pause, and to rethink human and non-human relations to temporality. We will pair this with a selection of theoretical approaches that challenge “unmarked” normative ways of perceiving time. In this way, our discussions will explicitly bring together content and formal analysis.

(This course is paired with the Übung: Narrative Analysis which then covers in more depth, the different formal aspects of analyzing narratives.)
