Comment/Description

How do archaeologists treat, study, and analyze ancient objects from the moment of their recovery until their arrival in museum collections? How do they document these artifacts, and why is this process so crucial? What inquiries can we pose to material culture? Which is the meaning and value of authenticity? How do humans interact with objects? What ethical considerations and challenges arise in sampling human remains and other types of archaeological materials for analytical investigations? Additionally, how can objects be effectively contextualized and spatially examined? What can digital approaches add to the way we investigate and analyze ancient objects? This course will provide guided discussions, hands-on experiences (also including real archaeological objects and samples), visits to museums and laboratories, student presentations, and guest lectures by international scholars, complementing the program of the PS "Arts and Crafts in Antiquity".
