The class provides a toolkit for quantitative social science surveys in the field of digital health communication, specifically the role of media in self-harm, and suicide prevention. Basic theories and statistics for these phenomena will be discussed along with current challenges, treatment, and prevention strategies. Students will work in groups to answer a relevant research question using a quantitative survey. We will learn how to design a theory-based survey, collect and analyze empirical data, and present the results. All steps are designed to provide enough room for everybody to comfortably develop and improve their methodological skill set. Statistics will be hands-on, anxiety-free, using state-of-the-art software and visualization tools. A portfolio examination includes several presentations throughout the semester (details in the class syllabus). The class (incl. assignments) will be in English, but linguistic aspects will not be graded to encourage students to take the leap.
