This three-day compact course will take place online and via ZOOM. ZOOM links and further details will be sent to course participants in due time. Each day will be divided into several 90-minute segments with breaks in between. In order to gain course credits in this seminar, all students are required to attend regularly, i.e. students must not miss more than two segments. An additional session (optional, date t.b.a.) will be offered to familiarize students with the ‘take-home’ format.
Teachers’ language use and interactional behavior in the EFL classroom can have a powerful impact on students: Ideally, teachers’ effective language use activates students, initiates language learning processes, and promotes lively classroom interaction as well as students’ participation in the classroom discourse. However, if used ineffectively, it may hinder language learning or even impede classroom interaction altogether.
This course serves to sensitize students to the most salient features of teacher talk and classroom interaction. We will also look at methodological aspects of making EFL classrooms more communicative and explore how teachers can ‘create more interactional space’ for their learners. Lesson transcripts and video recordings will be used to analyze and reflect upon authentic classroom interaction. The objective of this course is to sensitize TEFL students to the complexity of L2 classroom interaction and to the teacher’s crucial role in making classroom interaction beneficial to all. A course plan and reading list will be provided in the first session.
