Kommentar/Beschreibung

Prüfungsform: Seminararbeit HS (MA) (ca. 46.000 Zeichen). It’s been more than a century since women in the United States, Germany, and most European countries obtained suffrage. Since then, female participation in politics has increased significantly, e.g. globally the percentage of seats held by women in lower and single houses of parliament rose from less than 12 to 25% between 1995 and 2022. Similarly, the share of women as speakers of parliament has doubled, and more and more female presidents and prime ministers have entered office. However, some obstacles to women’s rise to political power continue to exist, and progress regarding female political representation in Europe and the United States has slowed down in recent years.
In this seminar, we will look at the different reasons for this development – including structural, legal as well as societal differences – and examine the paths of individual women to political power in high-elected offices. Looking at the life and work of important female elected officials in the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Finland, and other European countries our goal will be to gain a better understanding of the progress already made but also of the continuing challenges to gender equality in the political sphere on both sides of the Atlantic.
The course is part of a cooperative seminar taught at the universities of Augsburg, Bamberg, and Munich. It will include online sessions together with our partners as well as an in-person student conference at the Bavarian American Academy in Munich on July 21/22, 2023. The seminar will be held in English, term papers can be written in English or German.
