Linear algebraic groups are subgroups of the general linear group GL_n defined by polynomial equations. Examples of these groups are special linear groups, orthogonal groups, symplectic groups etc. Linear algebraic groups appear in various branches of mathematics and physics. They can be studied by methods of various areas of mathematics such as algebraic geometry, complex geometry, differential geometry or just pure algebra. In this seminar we are going to take the algebro-geometric path and follow the book by T. A. Springer ``Linear algebraic groups''. From time to time we will also venture out into complex geometry and differential geometry settings (there these groups are examples of the so called Lie groups).
The only real requirement is your interest in this topic and wish to work hard. However, it would be very helpful to have a solid background in commutative algebra (ideally Algebra II). Please have a look at the first chapter of the Springer's book mentioned above (available for download via University of Augsburg).
IMPORTANT: Due to the current Corona situation, the precise planning of the seminar will take place at the beginning of October via Zoom. There we'll decide on the format of our seminar and distribute the material.
