Some of today’s challenges such as social inequality, environmental concerns, and the effects of industrialisation and globalisation can be traced back to the early decades of the 19th century. Emerging in the 1830s, the so-called “social novel” (or: social-problem novel, industrial novel, condition-of-England novel) responded to the evolving class society, political reforms, and collective action (see Chartist movement) and addressed prevailing social issues at the time. In this seminar we will examine literary representations of social class and its intersections with questions of gender and race and explore a range of Victorian novels by major authors such as Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. We will situate our discussion of the social novel within the broader historical and aesthetic developments of 19th-century realism to gain a profound understanding of the Victorian era.
