The seminar offers students an introduction to some of the main characteristics of news discourse. We will also look at past and current approaches to analyzing this type of discourse. A particular focus will be put on the creation of meanings through the complementary use of words and images.
We will primarily use corpus-linguistic and multimodal methods to critically explore how news outlets (online and offline) make strategic use of language to represent events, actors and activities. A major objective of the course is thus to train students to become experienced users of concordancers and use computer tools to explore and interpret news texts in all of their different manifestations.
