Students of the MA International Literature (EAS-1781 / 1782 / 1783), please be aware that you need to complete an Übung or Vorlesung in addition to this seminar to successfully complete your module.
In this course we will examine a variety of works as spotlights that will provide insights into the intersection of the tropes “nature” and “nation” at different points in North America’s cultural and literary history. Topics considered reach from myths of “wilderness” as crucial influence on the American character, to the rhetoric of American exceptionalism within conservationist movements (for example creating National Parks), to writings that seek to understand the connections between civilization and nature and humanity’s place in nature (e.g. Transcendentalist writings), to gendered relations to nature, questions of environmental justice, and to recent fears about natural disasters and apocalypses in an increasingly globalized world. We will enrich our perspectives of North American environmental writing by considering the works we discuss in conjunction with ecocritical theories.
Information about specific texts to acquire for the course will be given in the first session.
