Ever since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 with the promise “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal”, its noble sentiments have inspired people around the world, even though the new republic often failed to live up to its own founding ideals. This lecture will offer a survey of the history of the American people from the first contact between European colonizers and the indigenous population to the end of the American Civil War. We will look at important events, explore the stories of diverse groups of people and discuss different notions of American identity. Topics will include aspects of colonial life, the American revolution, the founding of the United States, Western expansion, the problem of slavery, black resistance and the abolitionist movement, politics, religion, and social reform, gender roles, immigration as well as the secession crisis and the Civil War.
